Brown rice in a rice cooker
Use the brown-rice water line and brown-rice program, then rest for 10 minutes. Allow roughly 60–90 minutes for cooking, sometimes longer; the white-rice line and quick-white cycle are not substitutes.

Ingredients
Use the listed quantities. Rice-cooker cups are 180 ml; spoon measurements are standard measuring spoons.
Method
- Check the manual for the minimum and maximum brown-rice batch size. Brown-rice capacity can be lower than white-rice capacity.
- Rinse rice under cool running water and drain. Place in the inner pot, level the surface, and add water to the brown-rice line for 2 cups. Add optional salt.
- Close the lid and select brown rice. Allow around 60–90 minutes; some programs take longer because they include soaking. Do not interrupt the cycle just because white rice normally finishes sooner.
- After the cooker signals completion, rest for 10 minutes with the lid closed. Fluff gently from the edges toward the middle.
- Taste a few grains. If firm and dry, add a little hot water and finish cooking as your manual allows. If slightly wet, leave on the permitted keep-warm setting briefly, then fluff again.
Cooking notes & substitutions
Brown rice retains its bran layer, so it needs more time than white rice. A dedicated brown-rice program makes the process easier, although cycle lengths vary widely. Use your machine’s brown-rice markings as the starting point and record adjustments for the rice brand you buy.
No brown-rice mode
Follow a model-specific brown-rice method from the manufacturer. Repeatedly forcing a basic switch cooker back into cook mode is not a universal workaround.
Soaking
If your program includes soaking, a separate long soak may be unnecessary. Follow the manual before changing the method.
Batch prep
Portion leftovers promptly into shallow containers and refrigerate. Reheat only the portion you intend to eat.

Questions before you cook
Should I use the white-rice water line?
No. Brown-rice programs and water levels differ. Use the brown-rice line or the manufacturer’s specified ratio.
Leftovers & food safety
Refrigerate leftovers promptly in shallow containers. Do not leave cooked food at room temperature for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F / 32°C. Reheat leftovers to 165°F / 74°C. Follow package instructions and use a thermometer where appropriate. USDA leftover guidance.
