## Frozen asparagus in an air fryer with sesame soy finish

Prep: 5 min
Cook / rest: 17 min
Total: 22 min
Serves: 2

### Ingredients

- 8 oz (225 g) plain frozen whole green asparagus spears, unseasoned
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) neutral cooking oil
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) reduced-sodium soy sauce
- ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) toasted sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds

Use the listed quantities. Spoon measurements are standard measuring spoons.

### Method

1. Read the asparagus package and air fryer manual first. Follow any package-specific cooking or temperature requirement; frozen vegetables are not necessarily ready to eat. Set the air fryer to 400°F / 200°C and preheat according to its manual, allowing about 3 minutes in the timing estimate. The 17-minute cook allowance includes this preheat and up to 14 minutes for one batch.
2. Shake loose ice crystals off the frozen spears without rinsing or thawing them. Toss with the neutral oil and garlic powder in a bowl. If spears are firmly frozen together, do not force them apart; loosen the small clump during the first turn as it heats.
3. Place the spears in a loose single layer on the crisper plate. A little space between them lets moisture escape. Split into two batches if they overlap heavily or cannot lie flat; the listed cooking time is for one batch. Keep the soy sauce, sesame oil and seeds aside.
4. Cook for 5 minutes, then use non-scratching tongs to turn the spears and separate softened clumps. Begin checking thin spears at 8 minutes total. Most medium whole spears need about 10–14 minutes; remove smaller spears when ready rather than letting their tips burn while thick ones finish.
5. Check the thickest stem with a fork: it should be tender through the center, with no cold or icy parts and a dry surface with a few browned edges. Meet the package’s stated safe-temperature requirement; use 165°F / 74°C when a temperature is needed. If a thick spear is still cold or firm, continue in 1–2 minute increments and recheck. Extra browning is not a reason to keep cooking already tender spears.
6. Transfer to a serving bowl or plate. Toss gently with the reduced-sodium soy sauce and toasted sesame oil, then scatter over the sesame seeds. Serve promptly so the small amount of dressing does not sit on the asparagus and soften it further.

## Equipment that helps

An adjustable-temperature basket air fryer, a bowl, non-scratching tongs and a food thermometer when the package specifies a safe-temperature check.

The [Ninja AF141 5-quart air fryer](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CSZ7WBYW?tag=aeomantis-20) Sponsored has a removable crisper plate and supports this recipe’s 400°F setting. Its 5-quart capacity does not guarantee that long asparagus spears fit in one loose layer: check the usable basket floor and split the batch if they overlap. An adjustable basket fryer you already own is sufficient.

## Cooking notes & substitutions

Cook plain frozen asparagus in an air fryer at 400°F / 200°C for about 10–14 minutes, turning halfway and checking thin spears from 8 minutes. Keep the spears in a loose single layer, then add soy sauce and toasted sesame oil after cooking. Expect tender asparagus with some browned edges; frozen spears usually have less snap than fresh ones. This method has been reviewed against cooking and manufacturer guidance but has not been kitchen-tested.

### Thin, thick and cut asparagus

Thickness changes cooking time more than length. Check pencil-thin spears early and remove them individually when ready. Cut pieces often finish sooner than whole spears, so follow their package directions and start checking at the halfway turn. A 10-minute manufacturer instruction for seasoned cut asparagus is not a guarantee for every plain whole spear.

### Wet or soft results

Avoid thawing, rinsing and crowding. Start with plain frozen spears and brush off loose ice. Add the liquid seasoning only after cooking. If the asparagus is already tender but limp, longer cooking may make it softer; use a smaller batch next time rather than chasing a crisp texture that frozen asparagus may not give.

### Frozen into a block

A few attached spears can loosen during the first turn. A solid block needs to be separated enough to form a loose layer before even cooking is possible; do not serve pieces that remain cold inside. If the package gives a specific method for the block, use that method.

### Seasoning substitutions

Regular soy sauce can replace the reduced-sodium version, but start with ½ teaspoon and taste before adding more. Tamari can replace soy sauce; check its label if avoiding gluten. For a sesame-free version, omit both sesame oil and seeds and finish with the soy sauce alone. Garlic powder may be omitted. This batch is written for unseasoned asparagus, not an already oiled or sauced bag.

### Timing and batch size

The listed 22 minutes is 5 minutes prep plus a 17-minute allowance for preheating and one batch. Thin spears may finish sooner; thick spears or a second batch take longer. Basket floor space, airflow and the package instructions matter more than the advertised quart capacity.

### Storage and reheating

Refrigerate leftovers in a shallow covered container within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F / 32°C. Keep at 40°F / 4°C or colder and use within 3–4 days. Reheat the portion needed to 165°F / 74°C. Leftover asparagus will be softer, so heat only until it reaches that temperature.

## Questions before you cook

### Should frozen asparagus be thawed before air frying?

No. This method cooks plain asparagus from frozen. Shake off loose ice without rinsing, use a loose single layer and follow the bag’s cooking directions. Thawing changes both moisture and timing.

## Leftovers & food safety

Refrigerate leftovers promptly in shallow containers. Do not leave cooked food at room temperature for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F / 32°C. Reheat leftovers to 165°F / 74°C. Follow package instructions and use a thermometer where appropriate.
